Schwartz’s Theory of Values. The final precursor to our V-I-P theory is Schwartz’s theory of values, which recognizes 10 basic human values (enumerated below). His theory also entails what he calls “value priorities or hierarchies,” which reference the relative importance of each value to the individual.

For example, a conformity value was derived from the prerequisites of interaction and of group survival. One particularly interesting and prominent theory is from Shalom Schwartz, who proposes that there are 10 broad value domains that are universal and fairly comprehensive. This article presents an overview of the Schwartz theory of basic human values. It discusses the nature of values and spells out the features that are common to all values and what distinguishes attain. What is needed is a value theory and instrument that represent the broad and basic motivations that are relevant to a wide variety of attitudes and behavior across the different domains of life. The approach proposed below draws on a well-validated theory of the full range of basic motivational contents of values (Schwartz, 1992, 1994).
